All first grade houses visited the New York Common Pantry. This trip was part of a first grade service learning project. They saw the kitchen/dining room where 1,000 people per week are fed. The NYCP provides breakfast and dinner on a daily basis and sandwiches are available. There are showers and laundry facilities, as well as the opportunity to get a haircut. NYCP also connects people with agencies that provide help with finding employment and housing. People who need help obtaining food can come to the pantry to shop. First graders helped to bag the fruits and vegetables for the pantry.
In November, First Grade Houses will use funds that they raised in the First Grade Walk-a-thon to purchase the items necessary to make cheese and turkey sandwiches. Each first grader will make two sandwiches and decorate the brown-bags in which the sandwiches will be placed. They will include snacks too. They will donate the bags to the NYCP on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving.
