Dalton is a community that encourages exploration and understanding of other cultures and languages, and in House 42, Ms. Fisch is thrilled to be sharing her knowledge of American Sign Language (ASL) and the Deaf culture (combined with her passion for music) with the third graders. The class has learned that sign language is a language used by deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals to communicate, and that in different countries there are actually different sign languages.
The class has learned that sign language is a language used by deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals to communicate, and that in different countries there are actually different sign languages. In House 42, Ms. Fisch teaches the third graders many songs in ASL. During a recent House 91 for the Kindergarten through Third Grade, the students in House 42 were eager to perform a rendition of “Oh What a Beautiful Morning” in ASL. As you can see during the last chorus of the song, they were poised and confident in their ability to communicate the lyrics and emotions of the song even without using their voices.
