FP Celebrated the Legacy of Dr. King: a Program of Song, Story, and Reflection

FP students gathered on Friday at House 91 to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Students gained personal insight into one of the most influential figures of the twentieth century. A slideshow of photos throughout his lifetime gave them a glimpse into his life at home, including special family moments and of his leadership during the civil rights movement. Members of the community read quotes taken from Dr. King's speeches and shared their personal reflections about the meaning of his words. This House 91 gathering and other planned celebrations that will take place during Black History Month in February have been developed as a means of creating an ongoing dialog that will continue throughout the year.

"Whatever career you may choose for yourself-doctor, lawyer, teacher-let me propose an avocation to be pursued along with it.  Become a dedicated fighter for civil rights.  Make it a central part of your life.  It will make you a better doctor, a better lawyer, a better teacher.  It will enrich your spirit as nothing else possibly can...Commit yourself to the noble struggle for human rights.  You will make a greater person of yourself, a greater nation of your country, and a finer world to live in."
- Kelvina Butcher

"If I cannot do great things, I can do small things in a great way."
- Jocelyn Russell

"People fail to get along because they fear each other; they fear each other because they don't know each other; they don't know each other because they have not communicated with each other."

- Marcus Palombo, First Grade Student

“I have a dream that one day little black boys and girls will be holding hands with little white boys and girls.”
“I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.”
- Jan Barnett

Dr. King asked, "I know you are asking today, 'How long will it take? Not long because our generation will not make room in our lives for prejudice. How long. NOT LONG.' "
- Emily Fisch: Song: “The Dream of Martin Luther King”
