House 25 Visits The Morgan Library to Learn About Medieval Manuscripts
House 25 visited the Morgan Library to view its vast Illuminated Manuscripts collection. The children traveled back in time to learn about life in Medieval Europe and gained an appreciation of how books were made prior to the advent of the printing press.
The children analyzed the painted and gilded pages of medieval manuscripts and discussed the traditional tools and ingredients used to produce illuminations. Some of the ingredients included saffron threads, dried insects, and malachite chips grounded down with a mortar and pestle. Students connected the process of creating illuminated manuscripts to the importance of Eurasian trade routes, in particular, the Silk Road as a way of acquiring the necessary material.
As a follow to the trip, House 25 will be making our own version of an illuminated manuscript page. We will apprentice ourselves to Patricia Miranda, a master Illuminator, in our Dalton medieval workshop, to make paints as they did in the middle ages and transfer images to parchment with quill pens.
