House 34 Makes Kites With Wishes Attached - Inspired by "The Stories Julian Tells"
The Olympic reading group recently finished readingThe Stories Julian Tells, by Ann Cameron. At the end of the final story,Gloria Who Might Be My Best Friend, Julian and Gloria affix wishes to the tails of their kites and cement their newfound friendship by flying their kites together, in the hopes that the wind would whisk their wishes away and that they would then come true.
The girls and boys were particularly inspired by this activity and decided that they should, likewise, make their own kites and identify wishes they would each like to see come to fruition. They hada lotof fun constructing their own kites out of bubble tea straws, contact paper, yarn and art supplies. It's plain to see by the photos, the glitter was a big hit! The students also wrote their own wishing poems, and then wrote their wishes on tissue paper strips which became the tails for their beautiful kites. They enjoyed the perfect spring weather and each other’s company as they took their kites to Central Park to let them fly. The kites sparkled in the sunshine–almost as brightly as the kids’ smiles. :) While most of the kites remained intact, they agreed that identifying their dreams and goals was more integral to making them come true than whether or not they detached in the wind. They also decided that the activity bonded their friendships, much like Julian and Gloria’s!
