Magical Realism in the Teaching Kitchen

Students in Spanish Teacher Maria Nebres’s Spanish Literature and Food in Latin America class visited the teaching kitchen to recreate a Chabela cake, or a wedding cake, from the book Como Agua para Chocolate (Like Water for Chocolate) by Laura Esquivel.
In the last Assignment of the year, students experienced culinary magic under the direction of Chef Jaz — all in Spanish! While baking, students reflected on the impact of figurative language, such as metaphor and hyperbole used by the author to create elements of magical realism in her story. But, unlike the book’s main character, Tita, who was hurt and cried while baking a cake for her sister and her beloved’s wedding, the students were excited. They formed happy memories as they measured and mixed ingredients, organized and cleaned the space and utensils they used, and even helped sort food for donation. After they collaborated on many tasks, they enjoyed tasting their delicious creation. ¡Qué rico! Muchas gracias, Chef Jaz.
