  • Girls Indoor Track 2nd in Ivy, Next Stop: NYSAIS

Dalton Girls Varsity Indoor Track placed second at the Ivy League Championship, while the boys finished sixth at The Armory on February 18.

Senior Annika Maduraperuma claimed the girls 55 meter hurdle championship, beating her own Dalton record in 9.03 seconds. Freshman Maya Matsubara took third in the event. Both Maduraperuma and Matsubara were part of Dalton’s winning 4x200 meter relay team. Freshman Isabella Canada won the 1500 meter run in 4:49 and crossed second in the 1000. Senior Margaret Bassey topped the podium in triple jump at 36-01 and secured second in the 55 meter dash. Fellow senior JoJo Constantiner landed first in high jump at 4-09. Dalton dominated pole vault with junior Isabel Allen in first and sophomore Lily Dassori in second.

On the boys side, senior Kannon Hunter collected the high jump championship at 6-00 and stood second in long jump. Senior Holden MacDougall earned second in the 1600 meter run, and classmate Jared Davis timed fourth in the 55 meter dash. Junior Leo Jacobson was the runner-up in pole vault.

“I thought they had a great performance,” head coach Dana Smolen said. “They worked really hard and set a lot of personal bests. I didn’t care about whether we came in first or last. It was more about giving their best, and they gave their best.”

Smolen and the Tigers turn to NYSAIS at The Armory on February 27 at 5:30 PM. Dalton boasts 18 girls qualifiers and 15 boys qualifiers.

“It has been a little tough with some snow, but we’ve still been working hard,” Smolen said. “We’ve found ways around everything with our hurdles in the turf and using the equipment we have to make sure we’re prepared. I think we’re definitely going to have a lot of personal records, and I’m hoping we take a lot of people to federations.”

The Federation Championship is March 6-7 at Ocean Breeze. Qualifiers will be NYSAIS top two finishers from individual events along with all NYSAIS championship relay teams. Events allow additional spots if participants meet a predetermined qualifying mark.
