Message from Head of School, Jim Best

To the Dalton Community:

With our community coming together in new ways, with our students and teachers bringing new energy to their work, and with new hope on the horizon, I’m writing with news that’s hard to share: I've decided to leave Dalton at the end of this academic year to pursue other exciting and inspiring opportunities.

When I think about my sixteen years at the school, I think about this simple truth: education begins in relationships. So much of my Dalton experience has been shaped by my connections with students, who are a daily source of creativity and hope. I think about my students, my advisees, and their families, many of whom I’m still in touch with, some of whom have become colleagues and friends. When I think of Dalton, these faces, these bright, brilliant people, are what I see. Everything Dalton does must be done with students’ interests foremost in mind.

The school’s achievements over the past several years—attracting and supporting a historically diverse student body, assembling a historically diverse faculty, staff, and Leadership Team; reenvisioning and reinvigorating curricula in science, math, world and classical languages, physical education, and athletics; advancing an ambitious Diversity, Equity & Inclusion mission, and completing the largest building project in the school’s history—are the direct result of people coming together and building relationships. These achievements would not have been possible without the partnership of a faculty and staff who are leaders in their fields; extraordinarily talented administrators; a dedicated and generous Board; and an exceptional Parents Association composed of parents who care deeply about the school. Our accomplishments are proof that we go farther when we pull together.

An important principle I’d like to leave our students is that character matters as much as content. How we do things and treat others along the way is as important as what we do. I’m excited about Dalton’s future because I know our students will accomplish great things by carrying this ethos forward.

Thank you for the incredible amount of time, support, intelligence, wit, and ingenuity you’ve shown me during my time at Dalton. I’m truly grateful for the work we’ve done together. I want the best for Dalton, because I want the best for you.

With good wishes and high hopes—
Jim
