Dalton Tiger Report - 1/25 - 1/29, Warren Hines Night
A sea of blue and white filled the Dalton gym to support the Tigers on Warren Hines night, an annual winter sporting event that honors former varsity basketball player, Warren Hines (‘88). The Friday night commenced with JV basketball games at 4:15 PM.
On the third floor gym, Girls JV Basketball bolstered its winning streak by defeating Trinity, 37-22. Led by backcourt duo Jocelyn Mayer (‘18) and Rain Condie (‘18), the team’s full-court pressure flustered Trinity, forcing numerous turnovers and then capitalizing on fastbreak layups. Up two floors on the fifth-floor gym, Boys JV Basketball lost in a nail biter, 49-48, despite a strong sophomore performance.
At 5:45, the first of the two varsity basketball games began. As a prelude to tip-off, lineups were announced, handshakes were exchanged, and the national anthem was sung by Sweet ‘N Low, Dalton’s acclaimed a capella group. While the game was uncomfortably close for the first few minutes — cheered on by a capacity home crowd — Girls Varsity Basketball ultimately took control of the game. The team locked up on defense and effortlessly ran Trinity off the court on fastbreak conversions. As the clock ticked down from ten, the crowd began to sing the Dalton Song and stormed the court in celebration of the team’s victory. The final score was 58-27, denoting Girls Varsity Basketball’s fourth consecutive Warren Hines night win against Trinity. The game also marked the team’s 15 wins to 1 loss record thus far this season.
At 6 PM, Wrestling faced the Trinity wrestling team — a team which Dalton defeated earlier in the season — on the fifth-floor mats. A large crowd attended the match, intrigued to watch the talented, 8-0 team in action. Noteworthy performances include Casey Schneider (‘17) who defeated his opponent to whom he had lost when the schools had their first matchup earlier in the season. Henry Carroll (‘19) also had a strong performance for his Warren Hines debut. Notwithstanding these strong efforts, Dalton fell to Trinity, 36-25. Despite the loss, coach Teddy Friedman chose to view the glass half full, saying “It’s good we’ve had our first loss because we can learn from it.”
At 7:45 PM, Boys Varsity basketball concluded the night. The boys danced toe to toe with their Trinity counterparts throughout the entire game. Dalton was kept in the game by shooter Ryan Kotin (‘18), whose strong shooting performance from around the arc kept Dalton in the game. However, the team struggled to stop an unrestrained Trinity, who more than matched every point Dalton made for a final score of 53-41.
Other noteworthy moments in Tiger sports this week, compiled by Dalton Tiger Report Team:
On Wednesday, Girls Varsity Basketball played Hackley. Dalton had a sizable lead to end the first half — thanks to an outstanding shooting performance by Caleigh Ryan (‘18). Yet in the 4th quarter, Hackley made a bid and gained the lead with under 4 minutes to play in the game. However, as the clock winded down — led by point guard Ema Schumer (‘18) — Dalton made an enthusiastic comeback and ultimately won by 5 points.
This weekend, the wrestling team participated in the Mayor’s cup. Tareq Saghie (‘16) received first place in the 220 weight class, denoting the first time in recent history that a Dalton wrestler won the cup. In their respective weight classes, Casey Schneider (‘17) placed 7th and Clay Hamilton (‘17) placed 6th. Earlier in the week, the team beat Horace Mann 48-22 on Wednesday, on and off the mat*.
