GVS Off to an Auspicious Start

On Tuesday, August 30, Girls Varsity Soccer put on a clinic in its first pre-season scrimmage of the year, winning 7-0 over Hunter College High School on Randall’s Island.
In the pre-game huddle, Coach Sandy Taylor’s message to his players was to communicate well and pass often. With those words of advice, he sent his players off into battle.

From the get go, the Tigers were on the attack. With a strong offense comprised of co-captain Dani Black ‘17, co-captain Gretchen Doyle ‘17, Emily Rhodes ‘18, Jocelyn Mayer ‘18, Kara Siegel ‘19, and Gabby Mayer ‘20, Dalton had possession of the ball for the overwhelming majority of the game.

Dalton started its strong offensive win with an unconventional goal. In an attempt to clear the ball, a Hunter player kicked the ball away from her goal, accidentally hitting the referee. Siegel was quick to capitalize on Hunter’s error, passing upfield to Doyle for an effortless goal. Dalton took the lead 1-0.

In the last minutes of the first quarter, Black kicked a high cross pass to Doyle. Doyle got possession of the ball and found Jocelyn Mayer near the goal for a big kick to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead.

During the second quarter, freshman Liza Katz ‘20 added a point to the scoreboard for Dalton with a long, high cross. Katz exhibited great ball control and play-making ability in her first Dalton scrimmage.

To begin the second half, most of the starters retook their places on the field. From the sideline, Taylor continued to direct his players to pass the ball faster, instead of trying to take their defenders one-on-one, and to communicate more. Taylor’s reminders proved fruitful, as the Tigers went on to have their most successful quarter of the game, scoring three goals to extend their lead to 6-0. Each goal throughout the quarter was scored by Black, Doyle, and Siegel, respectively.

Natalie Melas-Kyriazi ‘19 lobbed the ball over the keeper to score the final goal of the game in the fourth quarter.

In the postgame huddle, Taylor indicated his happiness with the team’s performance, but also said that his team still had work to be done. He specified areas such as touching the ball, shooting, and communication on which the team needs to work before it is ready for the season.

Doyle, who led the team in scoring with two goals, shared her take away from the scrimmage, “Going forward, we definitely need to work on our communication. This was one of our strengths as a team last year, and as the season progresses, I am confident it will solidify.”

Rain Condie ‘18, who has been injured during pre-season, observed from the sidelines: “We did a good job of swinging the ball from one side of the field to the other and then capitalizing on those shot opportunities. Hunter’s defense couldn’t keep up.”

Girls Varsity Soccer’s pre-season play will wrap up with a final scrimmage against Marymount on the first day of school, Wednesday, September 7. The team squares off against Brearley on Friday, September 9 in its season opener.
