Girls Varsity Tennis took home a win for the first time in three years to cap off this week in Dalton sports.
Girls Varsity Tennis Snaps Three-Year Losing Streak

Heading into its match against Fieldston this past Friday, the Girls Varsity Tennis team was not optimistic. The players were coming off of Wednesday’s loss against Poly Prep and set to face another tough opponent in the Eagles. Friday’s match looked like another loss to the team’s losing record.  

However, the team triumphed, breaking a three-year losing streak.
 
Dalton’s success was a nail-biting affair; each team had won two matches with only the First Doubles match left to play. All eyes were on co-captain Josie Shapiro '17 and Caleigh Ryan '18 as they decided whether this game would end a three-year drought or add on to a slew of losses. Shapiro and Ryan rose to the occasion, defeating their Fieldston counterparts 6-6 (7-4 tie-breaker win), 6-1.

Shapiro explained what motivated her during the match, "After realizing we had already won two matches and only needed one more to win, I was even more determined to experience my first Dalton Varsity Tennis victory.”

Co-captain Molly Shapiro '17 believes, “[The] win will provide the encouragement we need to win some more." Jamie Gelman '19 added, “The amount of mental toughness and confidence required to come back from a three-year losing streak is monumental, and I couldn't be prouder to be a part of such a great team.”
 
Camaraderie and tight bonds between teammates have always been there for Girls Varsity Tennis, but results have not. That is, until Friday.
 
Now that the team has tasted victory, Co-Captain Nell Hurley '17 is optimistic and thinks it will be the “first of many.”
