Football extended its undefeated record to 5-0 and Girls Varsity Soccer took down previously undefeated Horace Mann to highlight the end of the regular season for Dalton's fall teams.
Football Stays Undefeated in Victory Over Horace Mann
In a showdown between two teams previously undefeated in league play, FOOTBALL beat rival Horace Mann 27-21 on a last-minute touchdown by Jordan Chambers ’17 at Horace Mann’s Alumni Field on Saturday.
The game was never out of reach for either team: at halftime, the score was tied at 14-14, and after three quarters, it was 21-21. But after a series of unsuccessful drives by both teams in the 4th quarter, Dalton found an opening: on an attempted double-handoff play, a Horace Mann player fumbled the ball, and Dalton linebacker Casey Schneider ’17 jumped on it for the recovery.
Dalton started its final drive near midfield and stuck with the offense’s bread and butter: runs by Chambers. The senior star running back needed just six carries to score, trucking Horace Mann defenders on his two runs to reach the end zone.
Horace Mann could not manage a first down on its next drive, throwing the ball four times before turning it back over to the Tigers. After a fourth down incompletion by Horace Mann, Dalton defenders Henry Firestone ’17, Jasper Taback '18, and Ben Broner '17 met in midair for a celebratory chest bump as the Dalton faithful cheered.
The win extends Dalton’s undefeated record to 5-0, a record which will be put on the line once again this Saturday in a rematch against Horace Mann in the Hudson Valley League Bowl Game.
Boys Varsity Soccer Closes Out Season With One Win, One Loss
BOYS VARSITY SOCCER ended its season with a 1-1 split this week. Starting off the week in good fashion, the boys had their highest scoring contest of the season, a dominant 4-0 win over Horace Mann on the school’s senior day. Alex Morishige '18 scored first off of a half-volley from the top of the box ten minutes into the game; Justin Taub '19 scored off a well-placed deflection, setting him up for a clear shot on goal to end the first half; Griffin Perry '18 scored the third goal off of a tap-in from a free kick with 25 minutes left; and Diego Urmeneta '19 scored off a through ball by Morishige allowing Urmeneta to chip it over the keeper with about ten minutes left in play, making it a 4-0 victory.
The team was unable to extend its recent winning streak on Friday against Trinity, losing 3-0.
Co-captain James Woods '17 reflected on the season, “Despite our slow start, we have tripled our win count from last season and considering our young core of players, it looks like we're going to be a strong squad for the next couple of years.”
Girls Varsity Soccer Snaps Horace Mann’s Winning Streak
GIRLS VARSITY SOCCER defeated the formerly undefeated Horace Mann Lions this past Wednesday night at Randall’s Island.
Dalton won off of two goals scored in the first half. Starting left midfielder Emily Rhodes '18 put Dalton on the scoreboard first off of a rebounded shot attempt by Liza Katz '20 that had hit the crossbar. Rhodes intercepted the ball and kicked it at the far post to give Dalton an early 1-0 lead.
“We weren't necessarily dominating in the beginning of the game,” Rhodes admitted, “but after our first goal, I was able to think to myself, okay, we are actually beating Horace Mann [the number one team in the Ivy Preparatory League].”
The second goal was scored by Katz who pounced past a defender and flipped the ball past the goalie.
Horace Mann came back in the second half with a much more aggressive offense, but Dalton’s defense proved indomitable as Dalton triumphed over the team that had won eleven games and conceded zero losses.
The win had special value for Dalton considering Horace Mann had snapped Dalton’s winning streak earlier this season in a game in which the Lions beat the Tigers 1-0.
Dalton ended its regular season play second in the Ivy Preparatory League, right behind Horace Mann, who won the league due to its winning record—though not a perfect record, thanks to the Tigers.
The team looks ahead to this week when it will contend for a State Championship in the NYSAIS Tournament. Seeded third in the tournament, Dalton will receive a bye for the first round and will face the winner of Trinity vs. The Portledge School this coming Wednesday afternoon on Randall's Island at 2:30.
Girls Varsity Tennis Caps Off Season with Another Win
GIRLS VARSITY TENNIS beat Riverdale in the consolation bracket of the Ivy Preparatory League Tournament on Wednesday, October 26.
The match was a 3-2 victory for Dalton and propelled the team to fourth place—out of seven teams—in the league. “It’s crazy to think that a team that has been last in the league for over four years,” Second Singles player Jamie Gelman '19 remarked, “was able to win three times this season and take fourth place.”
With long-time losing streaks shattered, this season has truly been historic for Girls Varsity Tennis.
