In the first week of gameplay of the winter sports season, Wrestling won its opening tournament and Boys JV Basketball brought home a pair of impressive wins.
JV Boys Basketball Off to Auspicious Start

A nail-biting, 67-65 scrimmage victory on Wednesday, November 30, at Hunter marked the beginning of the season for the JV Boys Basketball team. Just two days later, the Tigers defeated Trevor Day in its season opener by a larger margin: a 51-24 blowout. 

Freshmen Sean Ryan ‘20 and Mark Engel ‘20 stepped up against Trevor, proving themselves in the first game of the regular season. Engel led scoring for the Tigers, netting 16 points in his high school debut. Ryan grabbed seven rebounds, playing solid defense throughout the course of the matchup. 

Boaz Shaham ‘19 had a double-double against Trevor: Shaham scored 15 points, including the first 10 points of the game, and grabbed 10 rebounds. Brian Cromwell ‘19 and Tristan Sollecito '19 also earned double-digit rebounds. 

New players make up the majority of the team, with seven freshmen and two sophomores joining this season. Thomas Johnson (‘19), one of the new sophomores, remarks on his experience so far: “I really like the team. I think we have good chemistry and I’m excited for the season.” 

Wrestling Team Attends Lexington Tournament

Wrestling is off to an strong start. At the Lexington Wrestling tournament this past weekend, the Tigers won by over 100 points with a total of 6 first place champions, 3 silver medalists, 2 bronze medalists, and 1 fourth place finisher. In addition to finishing first in his weight-class, Julien Loo '17 also won the won the award for the most amount of pins in the least amount of time. 

From the junior class, Garrett Basso ‘18, Simon Rhodes ‘18, and Jonah Ryan ‘18 all won first place in their respective weight classes. Aidan Shepardson ‘19 was also a champion, despite this being his first-ever wrestling tournament. In the Lightweights, Jeremy Yarden '20, Jake Intrater ‘19, and Zach Love ‘19 all received second place. The Firestone brothers, Henry '17 and Nick '20, held their own at the tournament, both getting third place in competitive weight classes. Last but not least, Clay Hamilton '17 maintained his formidable wrestling reputation, pinning his way through the finals. 

The tournament bodes well for the team, which has upcoming matches on Wednesday, December 7th against Horace Mann and Wednesday, December 14 against Poly Prep.
