NYC Marathon Guest Speaker - A Tradition Continues
Mrs. Harnik’s father, Daniel Glass, came to speak to House 21 and House 45 about his experience as a New York City Marathon runner. This upcoming Marathon will be his 23rd NYC Marathon, among others! When Sean ('03), Liam ('15), and Maxie ('05) were students, it was a tradition for him to come in the day after the Marathon to talk about it. Mrs. Harnik invites him to help launch to their NYC Marathon study each year.
Daniel shared about every aspect of marathon preparation and running from what he eats the night before to the best way to tie your shoes during the race to avoid causing other runners to fall. He also explained every moment of the journey, from beginning in Staten Island at Fort Wadsworth to the many bridges that the runners cross, to the experience of running into Central Park towards the finish line. It was a meaningful connection to the second grade New York City unit, particularly understanding the map of New York City and the cultural and architectural diversity that the City holds. Daniel explained that when he runs, he raises money for particular charities. Second graders learned about the Achilles group whose members run with marathoners with disabilities and how inspiring that group of people is during the race. Daniel brought an array of items that he has collected during his experiences, so we were able to see post-race blankets, metals, numbers, and more. After the race, second graders will incorporate mileage in each borough into their math assignments. Good luck to Daniel and other Dalton marathoners.
