Dalton Tiger Report: 10.14 – 10.17

By Ema Schumer

Friday was a big day for VARSITY TENNIS, as they played at the USTA center in Queens, New York, on the same court that some of tennis’s biggest stars, such as Federer, the Williams sisters and Nadal, have battled on. With slightly fewer fans in attendance than a Serena Williams match, Molly Shapiro (’17) aggressively plays at the service line (see photo below).

While there were fewer days of school for Daltonians this week, sports highlights were as abundant as ever.
GIRLS VARSITY VOLLEYBALL won at Trinity on Wednesday. Dalton gave the rival school no mercy in a rally late into the first set, forcing Trinity to concede one point by hitting the ball out of bounds. Watch a successful serve by libero Julia Martin (’17), followed by a dig from Anita Kirschenbaum (‘17) to Lila Watts (‘18), who sets to outside hitter Jane McLeod (‘16) for the spike. Watch Dalton win the point here, c/o Antonio Maseda (’17).

At JV BOYS SOCCER’s 4-0 drubbing on Friday against Hackley, freshmen Ethan Hellman (‘19) and Diego Urmeneta (‘19) scored two of Dalton’s goals. The other two goals were scored by Arjun Prasad (‘18).

While on Wednesday GIRLS VARSITY SOCCER was unable to get vengeance against Trinity, who tied with Dalton at Homecoming earlier this year, on Friday the team beat Hackley 1-0 in extra minutes.

In the Trinity game, starting goalie Leyla Kamshad (‘19) suffered a kick to the head and is out injured with a concussion. Senior Olivia Tanzman (‘16) will assume the position of goalie until Leyla is healthy enough to return.

On Wednesday, BOYS VARSITY SOCCER ceded one goal to Trinity and struggled finding the net on any of their kicks. After defeating Trinity at Homecoming, the two teams end the series one apiece.

VARSITY FOOTBALL beat The Forman School 32-12 on Saturday evening. QB Jream Henderson (’17) had three touchdowns, one of which was a pick six*, and running back Jordan Chambers (’17) had two.

*A pick six is an interception that is returned for a touchdown.

On Friday afternoon, GIRLS JV VOLLEYBALL defeated Trevor 3-0 at The Dalton Gym.
