This week, winter sports teams took the court, mat, or pool for their first games of the season.
BOYS VARSITY BASKETBALL opened the year with a 70-51 victory over Grace Church this past Friday in the first game of the Dalton Invitational Tournament. Cortland Perry (‘16) made his Varsity Basketball debut, dominating on the boards and leading Dalton with 20 points. Point guard Zach Bernstein (‘16) ran the offense, finding Dillon Kersh (‘16) for multiple threes along the perimeter. New additions to the team, Ryan Kotin (‘18) and Peter Gardner (‘18) started their Varsity Basketball careers with key off-the-bench minutes. Yet, the second game of the Dalton Invitational did not reap the same results. Facing a well-equipped Packer, Dalton battled the Pelicans in a back-and-forth contest. Ultimately losing the championship game 45-38, the Dalton Tigers are at .500 on the season in their first two games.
This week, GIRLS VARSITY BASKETBALL went undefeated, starting off their season with three imperative home wins. The team beat Chapin 46-30 on Tuesday. Then on Thursday, they beat Trevor 58-25 in the first round of the Dalton Invitational Tournament. In the championship game on Saturday, Girls Varsity Basketball took down Grace Church 59-52 to win the Dalton Invitational and advance to 3-0 on the season. Grace Church surged to a lead in the first half but Dalton came back: starting point guard Ema Schumer (’18) drained 5 three-pointers in the game and Grace could not keep Captain Olivia Tanzman (’16) or starting forward Elise Bousquette (’18) off of the boards. Noteworthy, starter Caleigh Ryan (‘18) hit several mid range pull-ups in the second half. While the two schools battled head to head in the second half, in the last three minutes of the game Dalton secured the lead, which propelled the team to a championship win. This win denoted Girls Varsity Basketball’s tenth consecutive year winning the Invitational.
To kickstart their season, on Friday, WRESTLING beat Collegiate 75-0. With all but two matches ending in a pin for Dalton, Dalton asserted its dominance over Collegiate in each and every match. In their debut wrestling matches, Garrett Basso (’18) and Jake Intrater (‘19) both pinned their opponents in the first half. Noteworthy, Willie Swett (‘18), who had advanced a weight class, pinned his opponent in the second half.
GIRLS JV BASKETBALL had a scrimmage on Monday at Chapin. The game was played in four separate quarters with the score reset every quarter. Dalton managed to win the second and third quarters. Emily Rhodes (‘18) discussed the scrimmage’s implications: “I think [it] showed our potential, and although we still have a lot to work on, both individually and as a team, it should be a fun and successful season.” This coming week the team’s regular season commences with an away league game at Riverdale on Wednesday, followed by a game at Fieldston on Friday.
BOYS JV BASKETBALL went undefeated this week, beating both Trevor Day, 27-26, and Friends Seminary, 48-25. Guard Jared Feldman ('18) had fantastic performances in both games, hitting the game winning three to propel them to a win over Trevor, and leading the team with 10 points in its win over Friends.
- SWIMMING faced difficulty this week in the relay carnival at Fieldston. The girls and boys both finished sixth out of sixth in all the relays except for two, in which they placed 5th. The relay included the seven members of the Ivy Prepatory league.
While SQUASH’s first game is on Monday against Poly Prep, this week the team had rigorous practices in preparation for its first game of the season, which included doing drills and playing matches against one another.
