Dalton Tiger Report: 2/8 – 2/13

This week was very promising for Dalton athletics. Highlights include Squash competing in the High School Championship in Philadelphia, Girls Varsity Basketball having yet another undefeated week, Boys Varsity Basketball playing toe to toe against the best teams in the Ivy league, and a few swimmers placing in the top of their heats at the Ivy Championship Meet.
VARSITY SQUASH traveled to Philadelphia this weekend to compete in — for the first time in Dalton history — the 3rd division of the High School Team National Squash Championship. The weekend was very successful, as Dalton came away with several decisive wins, including Daelum Mawji (‘18) at the first position, Jacob Ellen (‘16) at the second, and Reggie Brewster (‘17) at the third. Congratulations to the players, their families, and coaches on a season well done!

GIRLS VARSITY BASKETBALL had another successful week, winning both of its two final home games of the regular season. On Wednesday, the team faced Riverdale for the second and final time this season, after having beaten the Falcons way back when, in Dalton’s first league game of the season. Taking the lead from the beginning of the game, GVB defeated Riverdale 52-30. Friday night’s game — against Loyola — was the Senior Game; speeches, cards, flowers, and photos were given to the seniors of the team as a prelude to tip-off. On top of this, the game marked point guard Ema Schumer (‘18)’s return after out nearly two weeks with a concussion. The excitement of the Senior Game and having the whole team back on the court propelled Dalton to a victory.

Despite placing 2nd at Ivy’s last week, WRESTLING  finished 7th at the State Tournament on Saturday. The team was beaten by schools such as Hackley, Horace Mann, and Trinity — teams that Dalton had previously beaten at Ivy’s. Although the team did not do as well as it had hoped, five wrestlers did place in the top four of their weight classes: Casey Schneider (‘17), Clay Hamilton (‘17), Willie Swett (‘18), Faulkner Wilson (‘16), and Tareq Saghie (‘16). These five will go on to wrestle at National Qualifiers at Poly Prep on Friday. If any of them place in the top four at that tournament, they will qualify to wrestle at Prep Nationals.

While BOYS VARSITY BASKETBALL ended the week with one win and two losses, the team nearly triumphed over some of the best teams in the league. Starting the week against Lycee Francais, the boys dominated play en route to a 54-32 win. Traveling up to Riverdale on Wednesday, the team suffered a heartbreaking loss to the Falcons, as Dalton was unable to make a difficult buzzer beater shot — the ball rolled around the rim before its descent off of the rim — that would have sent the game into overtime. On Friday’s Senior Night, the boys mounted an impressive attack against the Collegiate Dutchmen — who are ranked #1 in the Ivy Preparatory League — ending the first half trailing by only one, with a score of 24-23. However, the team was unable to maintain the attack; Collegiate pulled away at the end to win the game. Jream Henderson (‘17) received a laceration to his lip in the game and had to leave the gym to get stitches. He will most likely have to sit out on Wednesday for the final league game of the regular season, against Fieldston. Dalton proved to be a contender this week, which gives hope that the team can hold its own in the state playoffs — which commence two weeks from Monday — if Dalton qualifies.

BOYS JV BASKETBALL triumphed over all of its opponents this week, going 3-0. On Monday, the team annihilated the Grace Church School, scoring an astounding 71 points to Grace Church’s 17. Points scored by Dalton were spread out, with Brian Cromwell (‘19) scoring 10 points, and four other players contributing 8 points. Against Riverdale, Dalton escaped with a 44-42 victory, thanks to Jasper Taback’s prolific scoring, leading the team with an impressive 19 points. The week ended with a 52-38 win over Collegiate. Alberto Bitar (‘18) led Dalton scoring with 13 points.

GIRLS JV BASKETBALL also had a successful week, beating Riverdale, Holy Child, and Packer. In the game against Holy Child on Thursday afternoon, Zoë Fleishaker (’18) tied the team’s season-high for points scored during a game, finishing with 16 points.

With only one game on tap this week, JV SQUASH came away victorious. An away game at Fieldston ended with a 5-2 Tiger victory, despite an early deficit.

SWIMMING struggled to close the season at the Ivy League meet this weekend. Both the boys and the girls teams finished last in their division. However, Athan Yanos (‘19) received first place, twice, in his heat and Claudia Yanos (‘17) and Emily Mei (‘17) reached the finals in their divisions. These young stars offer hope for the 2017 season.
