Parkhurst Day Sheds Light on Relevant Research and Scholarship

Dalton's High School students and faculty took a break from the normal school schedule to participate in Parkhurst Day, a full day set aside to examine the importance of meaningful and relevant research and scholarship. Thanks to High School Director Lisa Waller, and the High School faculty, staff, and administrators, who planned the event, the day included 35 students who skillfully shared their thought-provoking research on a wide array of topics to teachers and peers.
In her address at the opening assembly, Dr. Waller set the tone by saying, "Parkhurst Day presents us with an opportunity to acknowledge Helen Parkhurst’s legacy and to consider how her vision is manifest in the contemporary context." She went on to introduce visiting keynote speaker Jennifer L. Morgan, Ph.D., whose research examines the intersections of gender and race in colonial America. Morgan discussed frustrations and challenges, as well as the triumphs and rewards of archival research.

Along with a small ensemble of dancers, Angie Cui '16 introduced and performed her original choreography that was inspired by her research of Chinese Creation Myths. Finally, the community gathering heard reflections from student panelists before departing to student presentations that, in two concurrent sessions, covered a variety of topics.

A faculty panel wrapped up the afternoon observations on the importance of mentorship and support for independent student work. Lisa expressed appreciation for the presenters' nuanced and compelling work as well as for the audience's thoughtful questions and positive participation.

We have included some background documents from the day to provide more detail:
Head of School Ellen C. Stein remarked, "I was gratified to witness the excellent preparedness of our student presenters and the community building that this event inspired. I am sure that Parky would have been very proud of the students' thorough and meaningful research. The feedback we have received is overwhelmingly positive, such that many are hoping we will make Parkhurst Day an annual event."
