Dalton Tiger Report: 4/4 - 4/8

After honing in on their skills at Florida spring training, spring sports teams returned home from the Sunshine State to play in their first games of the regular season.

VARSITY BASEBALL picked up a 3-0 win over Trinity on Friday, after losing 7-1 to Hackley on Wednesday, to split its first two games of Ivy League play. The shutout over Trinity was the work of two underclassmen pitchers. Julian Schlesinger (’18) struck out ten batters in six innings to start things off, and he was relieved in the seventh inning by Ryan Kotin (’18), who received the save with a 1-2-3 inning*. The team’s captain, Cortland Perry (‘16), provided all the offense Dalton would need with a 2-run homer, his first of the season.
*A 1-2-3 inning is an inning in which the offensive team is retired by three consecutive outs, without any of the batters reaching a base.

JV BASEBALL had an impressive opening week, highlighted by strong pitching performances. Starting the season off against Hackley, Ryan Kotin (‘18) pitched a strong five inning effort, en route to a 6-1 victory. Friday, the boys won a dominant game against Trinity, 9-2, thanks in large part to Devin Milberg (‘19)’s pitching throughout five innings, allowing only a single run.

After a successful 3-2 record in spring training play, SOFTBALL fell to Hackley on Wednesday in its first game of the season. Dalton lost 3-2, despite a good day at the plate for Zoe Fleishaker (’18) and deadly pitching by Alison Comite (‘18), who pushed through a strained hamstring to strike out 14 Hackley batters who dared step up to the plate. However, an invigorated Tigers team traveled to Randall’s Island to face Trinity on Friday, ready to pick up its first league-win of the season. The team did just that, winning 13-4.

BOYS LACROSSE opened its season against two formidable opponents, losing to Hackley and Trinity.

GOLF suffered a loss to Riverdale this week in the first match of the season, despite Captain Kyle Chu (‘17) defeating his opponent at the three spot.

GIRLS LACROSSE was unable to surmount its competition this week, falling to Hackley, who won the league last year, and Trinity.

BOYS TENNIS went 0-2 in league play this week. On Wednesday, the team fell to Hackley, even with a great performance by Tomás Vonderheide (‘17) and Alex Kaplan (‘17). With star player Justin Kallus (‘17) missing from the roster on Friday, Dalton fell to Trinity, the reigning champs of the Ivy Preparatory League.
