FP, MS and HS Teachers and Administrators Visit a Model Language Program
Teachers and administrators from First Program and the MS/HS Spanish department took a day trip to visit a model language program in Glastonbury, CT. on Thursday, April 14, This program boasts the longest-standing elementary language program in the country.
The group observed several classes and had a meeting with the Director for Foreign Languages and ELL to discuss program scheduling, best practices and methods, proficiency assessments and other topics.
We were inspired by the use of essential questions and Can-Do statements that guide each class in languages K-12. The NCSSFL-ACTFL Can-Do Statements represent the culmination of a collaborative effort between the National Council of State Supervisors (NCSSFL) and ACTFL, to connect NCSSFL's LinguaFolio® with ACTFL's Proficiency Guidelines. Can-Do statements also help educators plan curriculum, units of instruction, and daily lessons to help learners improve their performance and reach a targeted level of proficiency.
Along for the visit were: Sandra Brudnick, Grade 3 House Advisor, Carmen Campos, MS Spanish teacher, Nancy D'Ecclesiis, FP Spanish teacher, Carmen Herrera, MS/HS Spanish teacher, Lori Langer de Ramirez, Director, World and Classical Languages, María Teresa Madinaveitia, MS/HS Spanish teacher, Alexandra Nakos, Grade 2 House Advisor, Kavita Rekhi, FP Spanish teacher, Carlos San Juan, MS/HS Spanish teacher, Gillian Todd, FP Assistant Director, and Michele Viard, MS/HS Spanish teacher.
