Initiative Brings 7th Grade English & 8th Grade Computer Science Students Together

After reading William Golding's Lord of the Flies, Ms. Dawson's 7th-grade English students, working in groups, used Design Thinking to create a "prototype" of a Leadership Plan for the boys on the island and presented their ideas to 8th grade computer science students for feedback. The 7th graders also learned about Thomas Hobbes's and John Locke's philosophies on human nature and governance, and they had to consider these philosophers' ideas as well as the needs of the boys in developing their plan.
Vance Condie, a high school science teacher, created a mock-up of the island from the book, complete with its geography, temperature, and rainfall. The students used this information, along with the philosophies of Hobbes and Locke and quotations from Lord of the Flies, to create the best leadership plan, complete with symbol or logo.

The 7th graders presented the prototypes of their leadership plans to the 8th-graders, who had learned about design thinking in the engineering component of their comp sci class in the fall (and had also read Lord of the Flies last year). Michael Sloan Warren provided the 8th graders with an introduction to the Leadership Design Project, and then he, Vance Condie, and Tracy Fedonchik helped faciliatate the 8th graders giving the 7th graders feedback.

A big take away from the process was that finding out something wasn't working was a great gift--not a something to be discouraged about--because the 7th grade teams had the opportunity to revisit, revise, and come up with a final iteration of their Leadership Plan to present to their class and Ms. Dawson. Thanks to Josh Bachrach for giving Ms. Dawson his students for the day!

The clips here are from both the prototyping sessions and the final presentations.
