Dalton Tiger Report: 5/16 - 5/26

The final weeks of 2015-2016 athletics were filled with great achievements, like the Golf team's first win in three years and Track and Field's illustrious appearance at the Ivy and NYSAIS Championships.
In its last weeks, GOLF had numerous feats this week. Foremost, the team snapped its three year losing streak by defeating the Browning School on Monday, 5/16 by a score of 6-1, at Dalton’s home course, Sunningdale. A communal effort, the win was highlighted by strong individual performances, like Aryav Patel (‘17)’s 53 and Davis Haupt (‘17)’s 54, some of their strongest golf of the season. On Wednesday, 5/26 the team capped off the year with an appearance in the NYSAIS Tournament. In 18 holes, Michael Gormley ('18) led Dalton shooting an 88, and Patel and Captain Kyle Chu ('18) shot a 99. Adison Miller ('19) followed right behind shooting a 100, and Schumer and Haupt ('19) finished with a 108 and 114, respectively.

In its last two meets of the season, TRACK AND FIELD characteristically brought home a great deal of victories. At the Ivy League Championship on Wednesday, 5/18, Dalton history was made as two Dalton athletes won their individual meets. Captain Dylan Fine (’16) won first place in the 3200 meter race, and Arjun Prasad (’18) cleared 11.5 feet on the pole vault eclipsing his previous personal record by two feet. And if those achievements weren't enough, performances by Grace Welle (’16), Alexis Harris (’16), Ronit Kitei (’18), and Andrew Gamzon (’16) earned them All-Ivy honors.

On Wednesday, 5/25, the team placed eighth for both the boys and girls in the NYSAIS Championship. On the girl’s side, notable performances include Dara Swan (’17)’s 83 foot toss in the discus, which not only set a personal record, but earned her first place in the discus at the meet. Grace Welle (’16) and Alexis Harris (’16) placed third in shot put and pole vault, respectively, granting each of them All-State Honors alongside Swan. For the boys, Oliver Effron (’18)’s performance in the steeplechase set a Dalton record as well as earned him All-State Honor. Followed by strong performances by Devin Plumb (’16)’s seventh place finish in the steeplechase, Jordan Chambers (’17)’s fourth place finish in the long jump, Jream Henderson (’17)’s eighth place finish in the 400 meter hurdle, and lastly Arjun Prasad (’18)’s third place finish in the pole vault, these achievements secured the team three more All-State Honors to add to their slate of achievements this season.

SOFTBALL capped off its season on a strong note with a win against Riverdale on Monday. Despite an inauspicious start, trailing Riverdale 5-10 going into the fourth inning, Dalton mustered a comeback against the Falcons and went on to win 17-11. Caleigh Ryan (‘18) led the comeback effort, hitting a homerun at the bottom of the sixth inning which incentivized her teammates to make big plays down the stretch. Noteworthy, co-captain Emma Ullman-Kissel (‘16) made her first appearance in uniform all season having been out due to a torn ACL. Despite obstacles the team faced throughout the season, such as six players being plagued by injuries during one point, the Tigers finished the season in fourth place in the Ivy Prep League, having an even record of six wins and six losses. Individual successes include that Ryan and pitcher Alison Comite (‘18) were selected for the respected Second-Team All Ivy award.

In its last game of the season on Monday, VARSITY BASEBALL lost 2-11 to Riverdale, finishing its season ranked sixth in the league with a 4-10 record. The team will bid farewell to four seniors: pitcher Cortland Perry, middle infielder Zach Bernstein, catcher Dillon Kersh, and first baseman Spencer Kersh. Perry, who captained the team this year, will continue his pitching career at CalTech.

GIRLS LACROSSE finished its season on a positive note. Despite a loss to Riverdale on Monday, the team was able to rebound and end its season with a 11-6 win against Masters. Although it did not qualify for the playoffs, finishing in second to last in the Ivy Prep League, the team looks to achieve greater heights in the 2017 season with a strong underclassmen base.

Losing to Riverdale on Monday in its last game of the season, BOYS LACROSSE finished the year in last place in the league. With narrow losses, such as an overtime defeat to Fieldston, present throughout the season, the team came up just short of vanquishing league competitors.
VARSITY TENNIS lost its final match of the season to Poly Prep on Thursday. Noteworthy, Justin Taub (‘19) won his match at the third seed, and Alex Kaplan (‘17) and Henry Firestone (‘17) won their doubles match at the second seed. Although the team struggled in in-league play this year, coming in last in the Ivy Prep League, it found success in out of league matches, beating Friends and Browning.
Concluding its season with a hard-fought 10-10 tie with Poly Prep on Wednesday, JV BASEBALL ended the year with a 7-4-1 record. In addition to strong pitching throughout the season, three players hit over .400: Koby Bernstein (‘19), Jasper Taback (‘18), and Tristan Sollecito (‘19), who had the highest average on the team batting at .478.

JV TENNIS fell to Riverdale on Monday in its last match of the year. The team's record this season was around .500.
