Dalton Art Teacher Documents Faculty Travel Grant to Study Mosaics
Dalton artist/art teacher Carol Bowen takes us on a journey to Ravenna, Italy for her Dalton sponsored Faculty Travel Grant to learn about one of her artistic and teaching, passions - mosaics. Her video • Italy • Rocks • Mosaics • reports her journey and shows the intricate mosaic process she learned at the Mosaic Art School.
Aside from creating a beautiful mosaic work of art, based on a historical pattern, Ms. Bowen shot and edited this 5-minute video account of the mosaic process she experienced in the workshop, taught by mosaic master teacher Luciana Notturni.
Of her experience, Ms. Bowen writes:
"As part of my Middle and High School Art curriculum, I teach the art of mosaic. Students love learning the techniques, tools and materials to create rich artworks from glass tiles. To enhance my assignments, by including the history and techniques of ancient mosaics, I was awarded a Faculty Summer Travel Grant to travel to Northern Italy to study with Luciana Notturni at The Mosaic Art School in Ravenna. Ravenna is a World Heritage Site for mosaics, featuring some of the oldest, most beautiful mosaics in the world. I am very excited to be able to share this fascinating experience with my Dalton students."
