Girls Cross Country Wins Mayor’s Cup Varsity Race

For the first time in school history, the Girls Cross Country team won the Mayor’s Cup Varsity race on Sunday, October 2. The team came in first by fifteen points, eclipsing its second-place finish last year.

The Mayor’s Cup brings together athletes from schools across the five boroughs to compete. The leagues that participate include the Public School Athletic League (PSAL), the Catholic High School Athletic Association (CHSAA), and the New York Association of Independent Schools (NYSAIS).

In her debut appearance at the Mayor’s Cup, Toni DaCosta ‘20 was the first to cross the finish line for the Tigers. She ran the 2.5 mile race in 17:57, a personal record that earned her twelfth place in the entire race. Then came Eliana Weinstein ‘17 and co-captain Maisie Fisher ‘17, who finished the race in nineteenth and twentieth place, respectively.

The team knew a victory was within reach going into the race, but it wasn’t going to take anything for granted. Fisher said, “We knew we had the potential to come in first, but we also knew it wouldn’t be easy and that we would have to work hard.”

The team did just that, running a stellar race that earned it first place and a school record. Fisher added, “It’s a great way to end my Mayor’s Cup career.”

Other top finishers include Hadley Benjamin ‘19, who came in twenty-ninth place, and Lauren Franco ‘20, who finished in thirtieth place.
While Girls XC stole the show on Sunday, Boys XC played a strong supporting role. The team placed thirteenth in its race, led by Peter Gardner ‘18, who broke fifteen minutes in the 2.5 mile race. Andrew Bastone ‘18 was the second fastest Daltonian, running a personal record of 15:05.
