Girls Varsity Volleyball has gained momentum recently, winning its last three games in straight sets.
Girls Varsity Volleyball Extends Winning Streak

Girls Varsity Volleyball extended its winning streak to three games this past Friday, defeating Riverdale 3 sets to 0.

Although Riverdale had home court advantage, the Tigers set the pace of the game. Dalton wasted no time and got out in front early, winning both the first and second sets by a score of 25-12.

The team capitalized on Riverdale’s weak defense. According to co-captain Anita Kirschenbaum ‘17, “Riverdale's weakest point is its serve-receive and defense. I think we did a really great job at serving tough balls and placing tips and spikes into the open holes.” Ella Green ‘21 served to specific spots on the court that Riverdale players could not return, and Liana Wong-Wright ‘19 contributed to Dalton’s offense with powerful front row attacks.

The winning streak comes at a much-needed time. After the team’s homecoming defeat against Trinity, it went on to lose its next three games, against Holy Child and then the top two teams in the Ivy Preparatory League, Poly Prep and Fieldston, respectively. After Dalton’s auspicious 2-0 start to the season, the team had plummeted to a 0.333 winning percentage because of these losses.

Winless weeks can induce teams into despondence, but this was not the case for Girls Varsity Volleyball. Co-captain Alana Eiland ‘17 described the effect these games had on the team, “The teams we played were definitely the hardest competition we will face all season. Even though we didn’t come out of those games with wins, we honestly played the best volleyball we have ever played as a team. So we’ve been trying to stay at that level going into our other games.”

The team’s resilience paid off, as Dalton has won its last three games. The team has clobbered its opponents, not conceding a single set to its past three competitors: Horace Mann, Sacred Heart, and Riverdale.

The Tigers are now seeded fourth in the Ivy Preparatory League with a winning percentage of .500 in league play. The team looks to extend its winning streak this Friday when it faces Calhoun at home at 4:30 PM.
