Girls Varsity Soccer traveled to Tarrytown last week to take on Hackley in an exciting rematch of last year's NYSAIS final.
Girls Varsity Soccer Ties Game in Final Seconds

The clock was winding down in the last seconds of the game and the Tigers trailed Hackley by one goal. Hackley players were in a frenzy trying to clear the ball from in front of their goal, as a victory was only several seconds away from them. Hackley players frantically passed the ball between themselves and tried to keep it away from Dalton’s offense, but to no avail. Co-captain Gretchen Doyle '17 intercepted a bad pass from a Hackley player and gracefully booted it into the goal from the left side to send the game into overtime.

The bleachers were filled to capacity at Hackley’s homecoming on Friday night in Tarrytown, NY, as Girls Varsity Soccer tied Hackley in the last seconds of the game to bring it into overtime. Neither team scored in overtime, forcing a 3-3 tie between the two teams, who had last met in the finals of the 2015 NYSAIS Tournament, where Hackley came out on top, by a score of 1-0, as the State Champion.

During the first quarter on Friday night, Dalton’s offense dominated possession of the ball on Hackley’s half of the field. But an unfortunate penalty and a resulting penalty shot, right outside the box, gave Hackley a 1-0 lead. Dalton came back fighting with two astonishing goals scored by co-captain Dani Black '17 to conclude the first half. Black made a run up the left side of the field, where she received the ball, without any Hackley defenders guarding her. She effortlessly tapped the ball into the bottom right corner of the goal to tie the game at one goal apiece. Black’s second goal was off of a penalty kick in the box.

At the start of the second half, both teams returned to the field determined. But Dalton relinquished the lead to Hackley, conceding two goals early on in the second half, one of which was a defensive error. Hackley led again, 3-2, with only two minutes remaining in regulation. Dalton’s starting center midfielders Jocelyn Mayer '18 and Gabriella Mayer '20 kept pressure on Hackley’s keeper with many close shots on goal.

With seconds left in regulation, it looked as though the Tigers were poised to lose the game to the Hornets, unless Dalton could score a miraculous goal. Doyle did just this, sending the game into overtime with her steal and finish. “I was super excited when we tied it up at the end of the game,” Doyle said. "But I wasn't surprised because we are a comeback team. [Earlier this season,] against Poly Prep, we were down 2-0 at halftime and we ended up winning. And of course it felt amazing getting a goal in the last few seconds, but I mainly felt a lot of pride for the team and all of our accomplishments and hard work.”

With two five-minute periods left in the game, pressure was mounting. No one shouldered this pressure more than Dalton’s goalie, Leyla Kamshad ‘19. “In an intense game like that, the only thing going through my head is don’t mess up,” Kamshad said. “Because one goal just changes everything.” Kamshad saved multiple goals in overtime that prevented Hackley from winning.

“From experience with the team, we have shown that we can come back from almost anything. We wanted it,” said Black.

The team has had a strong season thus far with a record of 4-2-1. The Tigers are currently seeded second in the Ivy Preparatory League with a total of 14 goals scored in league play. Looking ahead, Girls Varsity Soccer hopes to win its last four games of the regular season, which would give the team a formidable seeding going into the State Tournament.
