Dalton Tiger Report: 10/17 — 10/22

Boys Varsity Soccer broke out of its skid and picked up its first two wins of the season last week, as it shut out league foes Poly Prep and Fieldston.
A Week of Winning for Boys Varsity Soccer

By Bo Peponis

With two weeks left in the season, Boys Varsity Soccer was dead last in the Ivy Preparatory League—it had yet to win a game. But after two decisive wins last week, the Tigers have built momentum and are playing in their top form heading into the final week of the season.

The team’s luck changed last Wednesday in its second matchup against Poly Prep. Dalton won a convincing 2-0 game thanks to the goals of Alex Morishige ‘18 and Simon Rhodes ‘18. Morishige broke the ice for Dalton off of a pass from Justin Taub ’19. He kicked the ball past the keeper into the bottom left corner of the net. Later on in the game, Rhodes buried a goal past the keeper to increase Dalton’s lead to two.

On Friday, the Tigers faced off against Fieldston and came away with a hard-fought 1-0 victory. Rhodes was on the scoreboard again for Dalton, this time scoring off of a header from a cross by Jesse Jacob ’17.

The team has been in a uphill battle throughout the season. Co-captains James Woods ’17 and Clay Hamilton ’17 were faced with the difficult task of trying to replace eight seniors from last year’s squad. The team has relied on many first-year players, such as Rhodes, midfielder Arjun Prasad ‘18, and Taub, to fill this void.

The team has lost in a handful of close contests by one goal and has frequently allowed the opposing team to score in the final minutes of games, and it has tied three teams.

Dalton has struggled throughout the season to convert plays on the ball into goals. Although this might sound intuitive, the team moved the ball upfield with ease throughout the season; however, it rarely capitalized on its many chances at the goal. Reflecting on the team’s weaknesses this season, Prasad said, “We weren’t able to convert chances into goals. We were creating numerous chances but we weren’t getting the ball in the net.”

Although the possibility of a winless season loomed over the heads of the Boys Varsity Soccer players going into last week, the players’ unwavering determination paid off as they snapped their losing streak and built a two-game winning streak.

The team will play its final games against Horace Mann and Trinity on Wednesday and Friday, respectively.
