Varsity Swimming enjoyed one of its most successful seasons in recent memory this winter, paddiling its way to 7 new school records as a team.
Dalton Varsity Swim broke many records throughout its 2016-2017 season.
Members of the team broke 7 school records: Boys 200 Medley Relay, Girls 200 Medley Relay, Girls 100 Freestyle, Girls 500 Freestyle, Boys 200 Freestyle Relay, Girls 200 Freestyle Relay, and Boys 400 Free Relay. During the record-setting Boys 200 Medley Relay, Max Fan ‘20, Emilio Vicioso ‘19, Sean Yang ‘19, and Laeo Crnkovic-Rubsamen ‘18 had an incredible time of 1:51.57. The time prior to this broken record was 2:03.42 in 2007, and 11.45 seconds is an extensive amount of time in swimming where the winning margin can be by milliseconds.
Coming into the season with a strong veteran lineup, the team was determined to build upon its improvement from the previous season. According to Jack Stettner ‘18, “The transition from last year to this year was not as detrimental to the team’s lineup. Many strong swimmers remained on the team, plus we gained many great new swimmers. These combined make a more powerful group.” This year’s swim team was one of the strongest in recent school history.
Co-captain Emily Mei ‘17 was one of the swimmers to break a record during the season. She was a part of the Girls 200 Medley Relay that came in second place. Reflecting on the season, Mei said, “We had more people, everybody got faster, and I think we were more bonded as a group. [It] was an improvement over the last two years.”
In past years, Dalton's Varsity Swim team has broken records, but seven is a new high. Although the team’s record did not reflect a team that was indomitable in the pool, the team, in fact, made significant improvements throughout the season, and it looks forward to making a comeback next winter.
