Dalton Debate Team Takes Top Awards to Advance to CT State Championships
Dalton's Parliamentary Debate Team spread its wings to travel Connecticut to snatch top honors in the Connecticut Debate Association's Extemp (extemporaneous) tournament. A new and challenging format for Dalton debaters, extemp competition provides topics and materials only one hour in advance of the debate.
Under the guidance of faculty advisor Ms. Courtney Norris, Hart Rapaport '18 and team co-captain Grant Gordon '18 took first place in the pairs competition, with Gordon winning Best Speaker. Lindsay Falk '20 won the Third Place Speaker award in the Novice Division, with Falk and Claire Marchand '20 taking a respectable third place as a pair. Also of note, Falk, Marchand, Gordon and Rapaport went undefeated with records of 3-0. In the exciting final round against a team from Ridgefield, NJ, with all of the competitors looking on, Gordon and Rapaport squeaked out a win in a 2-1 decision by the three judges.
Gordon remarked that this tournament provided an excellent opportunity to meet schools from Connecticut who will hopefully come to competitions run by the New York Parliamentary Debate League, which team co-captain David Morse '18 and Gordon founded, along with Bryson Wiese '19, and students from Horace Mann and Stuyvesant. Those in attendance were impressed by the Dalton students' expertise, poise and performance.
Also on the team are Ben Goldstein '18, Raffa Levy '20, Devin Milberg '19, Brendan Roth '18, Juliana Yu '21, and Zara Chapple '21.
