Grade 8 Students Participate in Washington, DC Seminar Series

In preparation for a grade-wide trip to Washington, DC., the eighth-grade students, and their teachers began taking part in Washington, DC Seminar Sessions.  Students will visit the United States Supreme Court, so, they engaged in meaningful discussions and lessons around the law and the U.S. courts with an impressive panel of speakers including:
  • Olati Johnson, a Columbia University Constitutional Law Professor, a former Supreme Court Clerk, Dalton parent and Trustee,
  • The Honorable Ronnie Abrams, a United States District Judge, a former Supreme Court Clerk, and a Dalton parent,
    and
  • Landis Best, a partner at Cahill Gordon & Reindel LLP, a former Supreme Court Clerk to the Chief Justice of The United States and wife of Associate Head of School, Jim Best.
The panelists discussed their professional trajectories, their experiences with the law and the cases that they felt passionate about in their work.
Also, in preparation for the many monuments they will view while in Washington, D.C., students participated in a lesson adapted from Facing History and Ourselves about preserving historical memory and the role of monuments as an integral part of our history.

Students will also visit The National Holocaust Museum in Washington and will see a presentation from Sandy Rubenstein, a Holocaust educator and middle school teacher from the Horace Mann School.  Sandy’s presentation will focus on her father’s memoir, Mark It With a Stone, a narrative of his ordeal and survival during the Holocaust.

Following each presentation, students will continue their learning through reflective writing assignments and structured conversations.
