Dalton Golf earned two stunning victories Wednesday afternoon to break a drought in league wins spanning over a decade.
Golf Notches Two Wins in Historic Showing
By Jacob Rose
Dalton Golf walked onto the Sunningdale Country Club grounds Wednesday afternoon having lost every league match it had played in over a decade. When the team left Sunningdale that evening, it hadn’t just finally won a match. It had won two.
Dalton’s record-breaking performance was spearheaded by Marshall Miller ’20 and Matt Schleifman ’17, who, at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots, respectively, tied for the team’s lowest score of the day by shooting a 47 over 9 holes. Miller and Schleifman are both new to Dalton Golf this season, but each has played like a seasoned veteran so far.
“Marshall is just so levelheaded,” Schleifman said. “He does not let the pressure get to him.”
Dalton beat Collegiate 6-3 and defeated Poly Prep 6.5-2.5. Dalton’s score against Collegiate marks a significant improvement since the teams' first meeting this season on April 13, when the Dutchmen beat the Tigers 8-1. Teams are awarded 1 point for every golfer who bests their opponent at their spot in the lineup.
The team benefitted from strong performances up and down the lineup, including from co-captain Kyle Chu ’17, who shot a 48 at the No. 4 spot, and Addison Miller ’19, who shot a 49 from the No. 5.
Dalton sits sandwiched between Collegiate and Poly Prep at seventh in the Ivy Preparatory League. The team now sets its sights towards the NYSAIS state championships on Thursday, May 25. After nabbing a pair of victories and escaping the league cellar on Wednesday, Dalton will look to conclude its 2017 campaign on a similarly high note.
