First Program Students Participate in Computer Science Education Week
We had an energetic week full of coding fun at First Program for Computer Science (CS) Education Week! https://csedweek.org/ Kindergarten and First Graders learned how to program Kibo robots by creating a sequence of different coding blocks to bring their own robot to life. Second and Third Graders used the coding language Blockly to program either an Angry Bird or a Minecraft character to move and perform different functions.
Regardless of the grade level, every student learned to apply CS ideas such as: identifying and sequencing commands, testing and persevering when debugging challenges. Over twenty Big Dalton CS and robotics students came to coach and inspire our First Program coders. In addition, Aly Milich (Class 2017), who is currently pursuing CS and Digital Arts at Dartmouth, came to support our goal to create a space where First Program students can learn about programming. A common theme shared by many high schoolers was how learning to make close observations and identify logical solutions to problems formed a great foundation in their abilities to think logically and stick with a problem -- a skill that they have applied across all disciplines.
