Future Problem Solvers Take Top Awards at State Competition

Junior and Middle Division Teams, and Junior Division Individual Competitor Advance to Internationals

Congratulations to all participants who attended the Future Problem Solvers (FPS) Skit Presentation and Awards Ceremony held at Freeport High School, L.I. on Sunday, March 18. Special thanks to all of the parents who came out to support our teams. Dalton FPS club members have worked hard in this rigorous after-school program, which stimulates critical and creative thinking skills.
Under the guidance of FPS club advisors, Ms. Sophie Gloeckler and Dr. Alicia Reid, one of Dalton’s Junior Division teams, a Middle Division team, and a Junior Division Individual Competitor all received first place awards in New York State. Students applied the six-step problem-solving method to a future scenario navigating challenges related to cloud storage.

Future Problem Solvers follow a six-step approach to problem-solving:
  • Identify Challenges Related to the Topic or Future Scene
  • Select an Underlying Problem
  • Produce Solution Ideas to Address the Underlying Problem
  • Generate and Select Criteria to Evaluate Solution Ideas
  • Evaluate Solution Ideas to Determine the Better Action Plan
  • Develop an Action Plan
Winning teams and competitors have received an invitation to advance to the International Competition in La Crosse, Wisconsin in June. Students in the Junior Division who will be advancing to Internationals are Lucas Chen; Madeleine Ford; Madeleine Garcia; and Talya Jacoby. The Junior Division Individual Competitor advancing to Internationals is William Shepardson. Students in the Middle Division who will be advancing to Internationals are Minelle Jeddy; Alec Maanavi; Serena Taxin; Bella Winckler; and Jasmine Wynn.
