Grade 6 art classes met for an interdisciplinary lesson on studio lighting and color manipulation with Dalton teacher and lighting designer, Charlie Forster Stewert.
The art students, who have been learning color theory through painting projects, color wheels, and exploration of artists such as Henri Matisse, were shown the distinctions between mixing color in light as opposed to mixing color in pigment. Mr. Stewert's presentation used a beautiful theater set, student volunteers, and Dalton's state-of-the-art lighting system to interactively demonstrate how to maneuver color and light to create a desired style, much like that in their art classes.
By covering subjects such as additive colors, gel filters, and visual techniques, these students were exposed to an important lesson that not only extended the scope of their skills, but illustrated the interconnectivity that exists between art, science, technology, and the world around them.
