Dalton’s Future Problem Solvers Take Top Awards, Advance to FPS Internationals

The Dalton students of the Future Problem Solvers club work very hard in a rigorous after-school program focused upon usage and strengthening of critical and creative thinking skills.
Last Sunday, four of our most senior club members attended the Future Problem Solvers (FPS) Skit Presentation and Awards Ceremony held at Freeport High School in Long Island. They wrote and performed a creative and entertaining skit which focused on how to respond to a stressful scenario effectively. This Middle Division team placed first for their presentation of an action plan and their skit performance during the competition section of the awards ceremony.  We'd like to give a very special thanks to the parents who were able to support our students on this memorable day.

We are proud to share that many of Dalton’s Future Problem Solvers earned excellent results. All students who participated in the club applied the six-step problem-solving method to a future scenario navigating challenges related to coping with stress and wrote a global issues problem solvers action plan. Their written work was evaluated and scored by judges after they competed in the state bowl.

Future Problem Solvers follow a six-step approach to problem-solving:

  1. Identify Challenges Related to the Topic or Future Scene
  2. Select an Underlying Problem
  3. Produce Solution Ideas to Address the Underlying Problem
  4. Generate and Select Criteria to Evaluate Solution Ideas
  5. Evaluate Solution Ideas to Determine the Better Action Plan
  6. Develop an Action Plan
Under the guidance of FPS club advisors, Ms. Kate Fenner and Dr. Alicia Reid, one of Dalton’s Junior Division teams, one of the Middle Division teams, and one of the Middle Division Individual Competitors all received first place awards in New York State.

Winning teams and competitors have received an invitation to advance to the International Competition in Amherst, Massachusetts this June.

Students in the Junior Division team who are invited to advance to Internationals include Vihaan Kotahwala, Campbell Langdon, Shreya Ranjan, and Rowan Salemi.  The Middle Division Individual Competitor invited to Internationals is Mirabelle Zhang. Students in the Middle Division team who are asked to advance to Internationals include Nathaniel Fox, Minelle Jeddy, Bella Winckler, and Jasmine Wynn.

A huge congratulations to all of the FPS club participants for all of their dedication and hard work throughout the year!
