Middle School Student Receives Award for Her Writing

We have another Scholastic Scope Magazine winner!  We are so pleased to announce that Aida Kasparova '25 has been chosen as Scholastic Scope's "My America" Contest winner for the February 2019 issue. Aida wrote a proposal for a monument to honor Barbara Posey and the Oklahoma Youth Council, who made history with their lunch counter sit-down strike in 1958.
In her essay, Aida wrote,"Because of what they did many years ago, fully understanding the consequences, made it one step closer to their America. A step closer to our America, which we want to be a free, equal society, where everyone has the right to seek '...life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness...' as the Declaration of Independence states. It was one step closer to an America I envision one day, of my America."

Aida's prize was a copy of the novel Brown Girl Dreaming by Jacqueline Woodson.
