Evening of South Asian Heritage at Bollywood Night

SANGAM, Dalton's South Asian parents' affinity group, hosted its annual Bollywood Night at the 89th Street Cafeteria.
The cafeteria came alive with vibrantly colored decorations including vintage saris and florescent balloons. A professional Bollywood dance instructor led Dalton students and parents through dance moves, as well as competitive (and sometimes hilarious) dance-offs. In between dancing, students had the opportunity to get henna tattoos. Many attendees wore festive, brightly-colored South Asian or Western attire, and feasted on samosas, Kati rolls, pizza, and traditional South Asian desserts. A particular culinary highlight was the assortment of delicious, homemade Sri Lankan sweets contributed by a 6th grader of Sri Lankan heritage.

The evening was extra special this year due to the diversity of attendees, and the presence of several Dalton teachers, including those of Indian heritage. Three students announced the launch of a new South Asian Club, led by Dalton teacher Tanjila Amin. The club will meet Tuesday mornings in Ms. Amin’s office, and all MS students are welcomed to join. SANGAM members were delighted to welcome and host all members of the Dalton community.

The SANGAM co-chairs would like to thank all their volunteers and all attendees for coming and for helping to make the evening a success.
