House 32's Farmers' Market Opens for Another Season
House 32's Farmer's Market was a huge success! In order to prepare for the market, the Kindergarten children learned about nutrition, where food comes from and how to compost. They visited a variety of farms, a greenmarket, and a grocery store to compare produce. Their market sold vegetables, basil plants, reusable bags and had an information booth, which supplied samples of apples and honey. The booth also handed out a brochure, outlining important facts about NYC Greenmarkets.
Advertising, pricing, displaying, and selling their products were all part of this learning experience. Exposure to money symbols and counting change (with adult help) was a necessity for the Market's sellout. The proceeds and any donations will go to Backpack Buddies, a charity that supports hungry children in NYC by providing them with free food for the weekends.
