Ms. Harrison's seventh-grade science class read an award-winning biography of Maria Merian's life, They started their studies sketching outside in their "study books" (inspired by Maria) and, with guidance from Ms. Payne, also led daily literature circles discussing the life of this curious artist and scientist.
Students related the way they conducted investigations in class to Maria's observations and questions about nature. Students also took a trip to Central Park to continue their scientific observations and sketches.
Many thanks to Ms. Feldman for recommending this book and to Ms. Payne for her collaboration
