This month the High School Debate Team continued its winning ways, the League honored Dalton's Middle School Debate Team, and The Public Forum Debate Team Hit the Road Again!
Dalton Debate Team Rolls On...
Last weekend, the Dalton Debate Team continued its winning ways. A dozen high schoolers competed in the Public Forum Division of the 16th Annual Scarsdale Invitational. The Class of 2023 was represented by Lucas Ribadeneira, Sam Schollenberger, and Leo Yu; the Class of 2022 by Max Cuello-Wolffe, Arjun Mehra, Max Greenfield, and Sergio Velazquez; and the Class of 2021 by Julia Freitag, Brett Hammerman, Rebecca Solomon, and Lucas Zhang.
Lucas and Brett were undefeated in the preliminaries and secured a first seed ranking in the elimination rounds. In the elimination rounds, Rebecca and Leo racked up five consecutive victories to make it to the tournament’s Final Four. In doing so, they captured a coveted Gold Bid to the National Tournament of Champions.
League Honors Dalton's Middle School Debate Team
At a Middle School Debate Tournament on November 2, Dalton placed third. The league also honored several other Dalton students: Wessal Bakry was third place speaker; Zach Berg, Sophia Davis, and Jasper Karlson were on the first place team; and Zach and Jasper were also the first and ninth speakers respectively.
The Public Forum Debate Team Hits the Road Again
At the 40th Annual Villiger Tournament in Philadelphia, Stella Anderson ’22, Theo Avedisian ’22, Alejandro Breen ’22, Charlie Freilich ’21, Arjun Mehra ’22, Caroline Press ’21, Lila Sternoff ’22, and Lucas Zhang ’21 racked up an impressive 16-9 combined record in the preliminary rounds. Alejandro and Lucas progressed into the Round of Sixteen and were recognized as top speakers: Alejandro was awarded 7th and Lucas 12th place out of more than 200 debaters.
Meanwhile in Chicago, Zara Chapple ’21, Rebecca Solomon ’21, JJ Yu ’21, and Leo Yu ’23 competed successfully against more than 350 debaters from 26 States in the 39th Annual Glenbrooks Tournament. In their fourth outing this year, JJ and Zara reached the Round of Sixteen; in doing so, they captured their third Gold bid to the 2020 National Tournament of Champions.
