Dalton Girls Compete in the 4th Annual New York State All Girls Chess Championship
Fourteen Dalton girls from Kindergarten to 8th grade competed in the 4th Annual New York State All Girls Chess Championship held from November 23-24.
The opportunity to join over 300 New York female chess players from New York is an important annual event for Dalton girls -- in addition to competing in other National and State events with the coed Dalton chess team.
The girls continued their history of terrific performances with the K-1 Championship team winning 2nd place, the K-3 Championship team taking 3rd place and the Open (K-12) team garnering 2nd place in their respective sections. Under the coaching guidance of Beatriz Marinello and Adia Onyango, Dalton girls showed their focus and competitive spirit. The First Program girls not only brought forth their chess prowess but also made a stylish sparkly statement to announce their presence!
The Dalton girls registered several individual awards – Iris Mou ’27 placed 5th and Julia Miyasaka ’24 achieved 7th in the Open Championship. Hannah Chan ’30 won 7th place in the K-3 Championship. Mia Jia ’31 earned 6th and Stella Olim ’31 secured 9th in the K-1 Championship.
The Dalton tigers also earned accolades in the special one day competitions with Maiya Kang ’28 placing 10th (K-12 under 1200), Stephanie Weinberg ’28 winning 6th place (K-6 under 900) and Zelda Lightman ’30 earning 6th place (K-3 under 600).

It has been wonderful to see the presence of girls in chess grow, especially in the younger section where we had record participation in The First Program teams.
