Eighth Grade Students Visited the Museum of Jewish Heritage

To complement their studies of Night, Elie Wiesel’s preeminent Holocaust memoir, 8th graders visited the Museum of Jewish Heritage’s roaming exhibition on Auschwitz.

The exhibition included, remarkably, half of an original barracks from the Monowitz labor camp, the part of the Auschwitz complex where Wiesel himself was imprisoned. Students also had the opportunity to meet with a survivor of the Holocaust—to hear his testimony and ask questions about his experiences before, during, and after the war. It was a powerful day made all the more vital by cultural exigencies and the recent rise in antisemitic sentiments in New York and around the country. For those interested in visiting the museum, “Auschwitz: Not Long Ago, Not Far Away” has been extended through August.
