Dalton Student Sends Best Wishes To Frontline Workers

During this time of quarantine, I, like many other people, wanted to find a way to do something good for the community and to support others.
I especially wanted to express my gratitude towards all the essential workers who are keeping us safe. I started to look around my house for materials that I could use to make something, and I found a stack of colored paper. That’s when the idea of making origami stars came to me. I remember seeing a jar with beautiful tiny stars packed inside and thought that this would send an important message of hope and thanks. I started making the stars — each one taking about a minute to create, with each jar containing between 15-20 stars. Each tiny jar has a small card with a message of thanks (in English and Spanish) and is decorated with festive ribbon.

After a conversation with a family friend, who is a doctor at New York Presbyterian Hospital in Queens, I learned about a group of essential workers that is underappreciated yet is doing vital work: respiratory therapists. Our friend invited me to the hospital and, on Thursday, May 21, I visited with this heroic group of physicians and donated 30 jars of stars to show gratitude for their crucial work.

For the next batch of stars, I would love to enlist the Dalton community’s help to help make stars as away to express their thanks and spread more gratitude. My goal with this project is to support the workers who are putting their lives on the line to save the lives of others. I think those working to heal the sick in this time deserve special recognition for their tireless efforts. I hope that this tiny gesture helps remind our essential workers that we all wish them good health and courage in their work!

Visit my website at: www.WishOnaStar.us for directions on making the stars. Make them with your family, fill a small (or big!) box with them, and send them to me at 34 Steamboat Road, Great Neck, NY 11024 and we will make sure they get to our essential workers along with your good wishes and thanks.
