After an intensive preseason, sixteen members of the Dalton Debate Team joined more than 1,200 students at the National Speech & Debate Season Opener.
Eli Diker ’23, Jasper Karlson ’24, Annabelle Eng ’23, Arjun Mehra ’22, Lucas Ribadeneira ’23, and Sam Schollenberger ’23 competed in the new Rising Stars division. Brett Hammerman ’21, Lucas Zhang ’21, Leela Mukherjee-Sze ’23, Leo Yu ’23, Zerimar Ramirez ’21, Julia Freitag ’21, Lila Sternoff ’22, Zara Chapple ’21, JJ Yu ’21, and Rebecca Solomon ’21 represented Dalton in the Varsity Public Forum competition.
After six preliminary rounds and six single-elimination rounds spread over three days, Co-Captains Rebecca and JJ emerged victorious as champions of the national season’s first tournament.
In addition, Co-Captain Zara was recognized as 8th speaker and Lila received 15th speaker in the Varsity division, and together they advanced into the elimination bracket. Lucas was recognized as 21st speaker in the Rising Stars division.
Fresh off Dalton’s first-ever national tournament win, the team is scheduled to debate at Duke, Jack Howe, Bellaire, and Yale over the coming weeks.
