Center for Popular Democracy’s Ana Maria Archila Speaks at HS

In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, the School welcomed Ana Maria Archila, Co-Executive Director of the Center for Popular Democracy (CPD), as its High School assembly speaker on Tuesday, September 28.
Archila is a leading voice for racial justice, economic justice, and immigrant rights in New York and across the nation. A Colombia native, Archila came to the U.S. at age 17 and, in addition to her community organization contributions, has also worked as a staff member at the Latin American Integration Center (LAIC) and Co-Executive Director at Make the Road New York before joining CPD.

She has helped build CPD into one of the largest community organizing networks in the country, with 50 organizations in more than 30 states and Puerto Rico.

During Tuesday’s presentation, Archila spoke about her personal experience and others who have positively impacted the immigration movement. She advised the student audience that “courage is contagious” and it is “an essential element to making history.”
