Third Graders Study Archaeology at St. John the Divine
In connection with their simulated Archaeology dig of Venice in the time of Marco Polo, Third grade Teacher Ashley Shaheen’s class took a field trip to St. John the Divine on Friday, October 22.
The students learned that the cathedral was built in the style of the Middle Ages, studied the modern art and stained glass windows, and learned that the cathedral is still under construction!
In addition, the third graders participated in a Medieval Arts workshop where they got to try their hands at rock chiseling, making rubbings of metal plates, forming gargoyles out of clay, and making stained glass with tissue paper.
The third graders are in the beginning stages of their Archaeology unit and utilizing the dig site in the 91st Street backyard.
