Third Grade Welcomes Award-Winning Musician for Silk Road Performance

Last week, the 3rd grade Scaringi and Shaheen Houses hosted New York-based award-winning electric and acoustic cellist, Nurmira Greenberg, as part of their archaeology unit on the Silk Road.
A native of Kyrgyzstan, Nurmira performs traditional music from her home country using a variety of instruments, describing the songs and their meaning. During the session, students envisioned merchants and traders from the past listening to music on their journey along the Silk Road. The 3rd graders also played instruments and examined other items collected by Nurmira during her many summers spent back in Kyrgyzstan.

The Silk Road was an ancient trade route linking China with the West that carried goods and ideas between the two great civilizations of Rome and China. Silk went westward, and wool, gold, and silver went east.

With the help of Archaeology Teacher Neil Goldberg, students examined a dig site simulation from Venice, Italy, and Kashgar, China, to uncover artifacts that may have traveled along this trade route. For a more in-depth look at this topic, the students also work with Art History and Museum Programs teacher Dr. Michelle Marcus and visit The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
