Women in Sports Club Hosts Atalanta NYC Founder Mary Cain
Dalton’s Women in Sports Club co-chairs Naomi Gomel '24 and Tara Kamshad '24 hosted Mary Cain, athlete and founder of Atalanta NYC, for a Q&A session in the Martin Theater on Thursday, December 1. Atalanta NYC is a nonprofit that employs professional female runners to be mentors to girls in underserved parts of the city.
On Thursday, Mary shared her story and answered questions to help educate Dalton students on the pressures of life as an elite student-athlete and how to navigate potential challenges along the way. Mary’s 2019 piece in the New York Times, helped uncover coaches' mistreatment of young athletes and the complicity of affiliated organizations.
At one time, the fastest girl in the U.S., Mary has dedicated her career to driving change in sports, with an emphasis on athlete well-being and gender equity. Her other positions include working at New York Road Runners and serving on the board of The Army of Survivors.
Mary’s elite running career included a 2014 World Junior Championship in the 3000m and a 2013 World Championship finalist result in the 1500m.
