Soles of Duende Kick Off Women's History Month and Perform at a Lively House 91

Students at House 91 were treated to a lively assembly on Friday, March 3, to kick off Women's History month, which featured the Soles of Duende dancing trio. The group, composed of dancers specializing in tap, flamenco, and Kathak, delighted the audience with their unique and spirited blend of styles and captivating performances. The group, consisting of tap dancer Amanda Castro, flamenco dancer Arielle Rosales, and Kathak dancer Brinda Guha, wowed the young audience with their rhythmic movements and engaging storytelling. It was notably the first in-person house 91 that Kindergarten and First Grade students have experienced.
During the assembly, the dancers explained the origins of their respective dance styles and demonstrated some of their signature moves. The tap dancer showcased the American roots of tap dancing and how it evolved from African and Irish dance traditions. The flamenco dancer explained how the Spanish art form originated as a fusion of gypsy, Moorish, and Spanish cultures, and demonstrated the fiery footwork and passionate movements that are characteristic of flamenco. Finally, the Kathak dancer shared the history of the Indian classical dance form, which combines storytelling, rhythm, and expression, and demonstrated some of the intricate footwork and hand gestures involved.

The assembly was a huge success, inspiring the young audience and setting the tone for Women's History Month. The students were not only entertained but also educated about the different dance styles and the cultures they represent. The second graders were treated to a workshop and encouraged to learn some of the steps and to express themselves through movement, just like the Soles of Duende dancers. Overall, the assembly and workshops left the young audience and their teachers buzzing with energy and enthusiasm.
