Dalton Students Train as First Responders in Weill Cornell Emergency Department Immersion Program

Five Dalton students recently participated in the Weill Cornell Emergency Department Immersion program, which includes a 10-month course with volunteer opportunities for rising junior high school students interested in healthcare careers.
This year's program included two first responder sessions, where the students learned how to respond to medical emergencies, perform CPR, and address other emergency situations. The sessions were taught by Weill Cornell Emergency Faculty and two current Weill Cornell medical students who are Dalton alumni. The students received formal didactic sessions as well as hands-on training using simulations in the simulation center. The program aims to provide students with direct interaction with healthcare staff and patients to learn how a large medical center operates while expanding their knowledge of the emergency department environment.

The Weill Cornell Emergency Department Immersion Program offers students a chance to engage in additional activities such as disaster simulations, shadowing physicians, and participating in departmental meetings and ongoing performance improvement initiatives (volunteers do not perform research or assist medical personnel with procedures). To qualify for the program, candidates must demonstrate academic excellence, interest in medicine and healthcare, professionalism, and a firm commitment to the program. Participants are required to complete 150 hours of service over the 10-month program, with an anticipated time commitment of 4 hrs/week scheduled at a mutually convenient time between Monday and Friday.

Special thanks to Professor and Chairman of the Department of Emergency Medicine at Weill Cornell Medicine Dr. Rahul Sharma P’34 & P’36, P’36 for reporting the story and photos.
